It's been almost 250 years since 'The Wealth of Nations' was published by  economist and philosopher Adam Smith. He described industrial capitalism as a new form of human activity. Capitalism has reshaped our natural world and transformed societies, lifting people out of poverty, increasing living standards and human well-being.

However, in recent decades progress has stalled with the shortcomings and fragility of capitalism being exposed as we grappled with financial crashes and the COVID pandemic - against the backdrop of a deteriorating global climate.

Competition fuels innovation, which creates wealth. Unfortunately western capitalism tends to fuel environmental damage and inequality; when financial profit is the only thing that matters ultimately humans suffer. And when companies become bigger than countries and governments they become almost impossible to regulate and tax. But focusing on the climate and humanity offers a new brand of gentler kinder capitalism.
